Overview
The Self-Retracting Dual Lanyard is Formetco’s dual-leg, continuous-connection fall-protection lanyard, available with either aluminum or steel rebar hooks. Formetco Select Dual Leg Self-Retracting Leading-Edge Lanyard with Rebar Hooks provides continuous fall protection when climbing fixed ladders and walking on billboard catwalks. Because it’s a dual-leg, self-retracting design, it’s built to keep a worker connected to the structure through transitions — such as moving from a fixed ladder onto a catwalk — without ever leaving the worker untethered.

The lanyard is approved for foot level tie-off and leading-edge applications, rated for work heights over 15 ft. with a maximum working load of 310 lbs. Its self-retracting design allows for 100% tie-off at all times, since the connection legs can extend and retract with the worker’s movement rather than requiring a full disconnect-and-reconnect at every transition point on a structure. The unit is designed to instantly interrupt an initiated fall, and its high-impact ABS plastic housing is built to hold up to repeated use in an outdoor, industrial environment. Steel or aluminum rebar hooks are available, and the easy-to-use connection pin makes attaching and detaching straightforward even while working at height.
A built-in swivel prevents the lanyard from twisting during use, which helps keep the connection legs untangled as a worker moves around the structure. The shock absorber pack is engineered to activate only under high levels of force, and impact indicators will be exposed if the unit is ever subjected to a fall-arrest event — a visual cue that tells an inspector the unit needs to be taken out of service and evaluated. The webbing itself is 7 ft. in length and made from 1 in. Dyneema (HPPE) material with a breaking strength of 6,000 lbs., and the lanyard meets or exceeds ANSI Z359.14-2014 and OSHA applicable standards. As with all Formetco fall-arrest lanyards, this unit is designed for use only with a fall rated full body harness.
Cleaning
Hand wash with cold water and neutral soap, dry in the shade and keep away from the sunlight when storing.
Inspection
Make an inspection plan with qualified personnel. The products are subject to an inspection before and after each use. Check for damage, deterioration or malfunction of stitching, webbing, labels and hooks. A written or electronic record of each inspection should be filled out and kept — a routine that helps confirm the lanyard remains reliable across its working life on the job site.
Steel vs. Aluminum Rebar Hooks: Which to Choose
This lanyard is also available with steel rebar hooks instead of aluminum. Aluminum hooks keep the overall lanyard lighter, which crews making long or frequent climbs often prefer, while steel hooks hold up better under heavy repeated contact with structural steel and abrasive anchor points. Both use the same 7 ft. Dyneema webbing, 310 lb. working load rating, and ANSI Z359.14-2014 / OSHA compliance — the hook material is the only functional difference between the two.
Below are common questions crews ask about the Self-Retracting Dual Lanyard.
How is this different from the shock-absorbing version?
Both are dual-leg lanyards rated for 310 lbs. and built to ANSI/OSHA fall-arrest standards, but they manage leg length differently. This self-retracting version keeps both legs continuously adjusted to the worker’s position, which suits catwalk work and irregular anchor spacing. The shock-absorbing version instead uses legs that extend and contract to a fixed length, a simpler mechanism well suited to ladder climbs with predictable anchor spacing.
How do I know if this lanyard has been through a fall-arrest event?
Impact indicators become exposed once the shock absorber pack has activated, giving an inspector a clear signal the unit needs to be taken out of service.
Does this lanyard provide fall protection on its own?
Yes — unlike a resting or positioning lanyard, this self-retracting lanyard is a fall-arrest device on its own, but it must still be used with a fall rated full body harness, never a body belt alone.
How often should it be inspected?
Before and after each use, with a written or electronic inspection record kept as part of a crew’s fall-protection program.
Part of a Complete Fall-Protection System
This lanyard is one piece of a full fall-protection setup, not a stand-alone solution. It connects to a fall rated full body harness, and on taller billboard ladders, crews often pair it with a resting lanyard to reduce fatigue on long climbs, or a cable sleeve and vertical lifeline system for structures with extended runs. Standardizing on the same lanyard, harness, and lifeline components across a fleet of structures keeps inspection and training consistent for a crew moving between sites.
