PE Poster Conversion Date Approaches

During the past year, there has been a great deal of discussion surrounding the outdoor industry’s conversion from paper and paste posters to polyethylene or PE poster substrates. Independents and large outdoor companies have begun transitioning to the use of PE posters. These operators are on schedule to complete conversion by January 1, 2009, and have announced paper and paste posters will no longer be accepted for posting on March 9, 2009.

By the March 9 conversion date, more than 126,000 poster panels will accommodate only PE posters, representing 63% of the total poster inventory in the United States. This dynamic shift is likely to have the biggest impact on outdoor companies operating in the top 25 markets as national advertisers convert exclusively to PE poster usage.

Since the size is standard on all posters, the new PE posters can be produced by most printers. Three prominent installation systems are in the marketplace but this factor will not impact the industry’s use of PE materials since printers will have the ability to finish posters to accommodate the differences in the installation systems.

PE posters do not flag so it will no longer be necessary to produce a 10% poster overage for campaigns. PE posters are resilient with field tests proving these substrates will maintain strength and quality for several months. However, PE posters will not be rotated so a sufficient number of poster units should be produced every time a campaign is posted or reposted.
